Signs of the Times (part 11) - Keep Calm and Carry On

The early days of World War II have been described as England's darkest hour.

Yet, there was a plan to encourage the people and help them cope in case the unthinkable happened. But that plan was suppressed as the Allies won the war, and it was almost forgotten.

After September 11, 2001, and the turmoil that followed, the message was resurrected and struck a chord with our darkest hours.

Here is the rest of the story ....

https://youtu.be/EDsrkpPNCnA?si=jAWV5TSZzb3uweiH

You will hear of wars and rumors of wars,
but see to it that you are not alarmed.
Such things must happen,
but the end is still to come.

Matthew 24:6 (NIV)

Those are ....

Signs of the Times

Remember in your darkest hours that the message is true today as it was over 80 years ago.

Keep Calm and Carry On

We'll get through this.

Signs of the Times (part 10) - Anywhere vs Somewhere

womanfactory1940s/wikipedia.com

At the time of this post, the coronavirus pandemic has reared its ugly head. And in a few short weeks, our world has been turned upside down. As nations, states, shutdown. Isolate. Self-quarantine.

For updates, check out this map: John Hopkins Coronavirus

As a result,  some jobs are harder hit than others. It breaks out along these lines:

Anywhere vs. Somewhere

The Anywheres: Those who can work from home, online mostly, anywhere, are the least affected.

The Somewheres: Those who need to go to a place of business where people congregate or interact physically with people are affected the most. Like restaurants, hair salons, libraries, schools, banks, stores, factories, sports, casinos, theaters, conferences, concerts, ...

The video below shows the difference between the Anywheres (globalist) and the Somewheres (nationalist) in the context of the 2016 election:

And many of the somewheres soldier on to keep the rest of us going.

Healthcare workers, first responders, truck drivers, store clerks, farmers, ranchers, factory workers--especially those tasked to produce medical equipment in short supply.

Somewheres are the heroes in a pandemic. And their importance has come to light in these...

Signs of the Times (part 9) - Roaring 20's x 2

Saturday Evening Post/wikipedia.com

1920s

The Roaring Twenties.

A hundred year ago.

A wild time of changes.

Dress went from ankle length to mini-skirts.

Women got the vote.

People danced to upbeat music like The Charleston.

It was a decade of millionaires and moguls.

Stuff that made The Great Gatsby.

1920

The decade started on the tails of the First World War (1914-1918).

The decade ended that Black Tuesday in October of 1929 with the stock market crash.

Which triggered the Great Depression (1929-1939)

That ended with the Second World War (1939-1945)

Turned the world upside down.

Now it's...

2020

New century.

New millennium.

We're into...

The Roaring 20's x 2

What will this decade bring?

As Mark Twain has been given credit for this proverbial gem:

History doesn’t repeat itself
but it often rhymes

Hang on, friends.

We're in for a wild ride.

PPP (part 1) - All Men are Liars

Proverb Scroll/wikipeida.com

Remember this childhood taunt on the playground?

Liar, liar, pants on fire.
Nose as long as a telephone wire.
[ reference: Liar Liar ]

And how many have heard this joke?

How to tell a politician is lying...his lips move.
[ reference:  How to tell...]

And there is much said about this in Psalms and Proverbs about Politics.

Here we go....

Psalms:

King David once said -

I said in my haste,
All men are liars.

Psalm 116:11 (KJV)

And I've heard it said, after giving it a lot of thought, many of us come to that same conclusion -

Everybody lies

So did House, the surly doctor in the TV series named after his character, House (2004 - 2012).

"It's a basic truth of the human condition
that everybody lies.
The only variable is about what."

Indeed that's a proverb. And there's many like them.

Proverbs:

King David's son Solomon gave this nugget -

The lip of truth shall be established for ever:
but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
Proverbs 12:19 (KJV)

But what about this moment? The politically expedient.

Politics:

We've seen this play out in the various types of media. Below is a clip that could be the playbook for many a politician from the old movie, A Guide for the Married Man (1967)

It is described as: A man gives his co-worker a series of lessons on how to cheat on one's wife without being caught.

Like who are going believe, me or your lying eyes as shown in this scene below:

Deny, Deny, Deny

In thousands of years, human nature hasn't change.

And as King Solomon once said:
...
and there is no new thing under the sun.
Ecclesiastes 1:9 (KJV)

And the words from the Old Testament prophet Isaiah about lying are just as true today.

For your hands are defiled with blood,
and your fingers with iniquity;
your lips have spoken lies,
your tongue hath muttered perverseness.
Isaiah 59:3 (KJV)

The song below contain those words of the prophet as a lament, but also hope as offered in the Gospel:

( reference: https://youtu.be/62p_JWGBRlM    )

Here are the full lyrics from the The Liberated Wailing Wall - I Am Not Ashamed

* The Arm of the Lord

* I Am Not Ashamed

And as our country is so divided and evil seems to be unleashed, a look at Psalms and Proverbs along side Politics can illuminate the Sign of the Times as well offer some hope for troubling days.

So begins the new thread ...

Signs of the Times (part 8) - #JustPray

Lord's Prayer/everystockphoto.com

The Church of England has launched a new site, Just Pray, to offer advice on what prayer is and how to pray. The campaign is geared for the digital age, and one of its chosen venues to promote the new site is to advertise in theaters.

The clip below (which was cleared by the Cinema Advertising Authority and British Board of Film Classification) was scheduled when the new Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens, debuted a week before Christmas.

But the Digital Cinema Media, which handles most of the cinema advertising in the UK, barred the ad. They believe it "carries the risk of upsetting, or offending, audiences".

[reference: Church 'bewildered' by refusal to screen Lord's Prayer ad ; U.K. Theaters Deny "Just Pray" Ad In Front of 'Star Wars' Screenings ]

Really?

As our Lord said, after He taught us to pray:

But I tell you, love your enemies
and pray for those who persecute you

Matthew 5:44 (NIV)

So

Let us

Signs of the Times (Part 7) - Leap Second - the new Y2K?

Wikipedia/Leap Second - June 30, 2012

Remember 1999?

You must be an old timer then.  :)  It was last century. Actually last millennium. Back then, we were all bracing for the dreaded ...

Y2K - the year 2000

For some, it was the End of the World. And for grins, here are some of those predictions of Armageddon, nuclear holocaust, the End Times:  10 Failed Doomsday Predictions (2009)

Side note:  It's interesting when Jesus spoke of the End Times while on earth, He said He didn't know the date. Only the Father in Heaven knew the day and the hour.  (reference: Matthew 24)  Amazing how many people claim to know more about this than Jesus!

Back to Y2K, 2000 years after Jesus ...

For others, Y2K meant the Millennium Bug (which could have meant the end of the world). Our computers, which we have become so dependent upon for everything it seems, were not ready to handle the roll over from December 31, 1999 to January 1, 2000. [reference: Y2K bug from Encyclopaedia Britannica]

This clip, a parody on the cartoon Godzilla, expresses the concern, humorously.

Time marched on. And there were glitches as the calendar rolled from 1999 to 2000. But  we survived. Since we are still here, the end of the world didn't happen ... yet.  :)

Next scare ...

December 21, 2012 - End of the World

At least according to the Mayans. Or so they say. [reference: The Mayan Calendar - predicting the end of the world?]

And the Mayan calendar spawned this disaster movie - 2012: 2012 | Sony Pictures

Yet, there were skeptics that it was just another day:

We're still here. And there is an explanation for that: Mayan Calendar And The End-Of-The-World Explained

Now, in the coming week we are facing a ...

Mini-Y2K, the Leap second - midnight, June 30, 2015

To adjust our standardized clocks, a second will be added to our year. An extra second should be no biggie.  Again, it's the old we-are-so-dependent-upon-computers thing.  This extra second could really screw us up:  Leap second on June 30 will be 'mini-Y2K'

The dreaded leap second, coming this June 30, is explained here:

But this has happened 25 times since 1972 and the last time was 2012,  which caused computer problems. Yet, we survived the 2012 leap second and the Mayan calendar scare.  It wasn't the End of World ... yet ;)

See you on July 1 ... Lord willing ...

Timing is everything in this world of hi-tech, which is just another one of the ....

Signs of the Times (part 6) - Fear of Missing Out

everystockphoto.com/Social Media Patterns
First World Problems?

May these be one of the Signs of the Times?

What are some of these big First World Problems?  And in this world of pain, doom, and strife, they seem rather trivial.  Here are a few of them, which you can tweet - for grins: First World Problems - Funny First World Problem Meme Images

Along with these First World Problem comes another phobia - much of it rooted in social media and the deluge of information coming at us from the ubiquitous internet:

FOMO - Fear of Missing Out

It's an understatement to say there is a lot of information out there.  How do we begin to filter what is important?  Some of this was addressed in a previous blog:   Proverbs (part 1) - Information vs. Wisdom .  And in the cyberspace, we did make many searches, so we would not miss out, such as is summarized here:  Infographic: What You Searched Google For 2014 | Digital Buzz Blog

But the video clip below explains this new First World Problem fear - FOMO - with its philosophical spin:

And King Solomon expressed some of this FOMO - the longing in the human spirit for something more, that there is an intuition that there is something greater.  He infers that the Creator made us this way:

He has made everything beautiful in its time.
He has also set eternity in the human heart;
yet no one can fathom what God has done
from beginning to end.
 Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV)

But to not to commit?  Really?  Not make a choice?  Is that not a choice?  Actually, there is an old saying about this phobia (from James, the Just, the half-brother of Jesus):

A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
James 1:8 (KJV)

Perhaps, this restlessness, wanting it all, but not committing, refusing to choose, being double minded, unstable, is one of the

Signs of the Times (part 5) - Staycations

everystockphoto/fourth-july-luckenbach
Summer will be officially over September 22, and in many places, children are already back at school.  And during this transition, some of may look back at our ...

Vacations ...

As Labor Day comes this weekend, this particular holiday marks the end of the summer and * sob!* summer vacations.  Hence, I reflect on the few trips we took - on a budget.

One trip was made economical by cashing in points to stay in a national chain.  That was sweet.  Another, we stayed off the beaten path in a most reasonably priced motel - old, but clean, comfortable beds, and working AC.  (More than I get at some high price chains.)

But other trips, motels - especially in a bad economy - did not reflect that we still were in a bad economy.  Hence, we made use of ...

Daycations ...

We had looked into some short stays near some National Parks, as we are living already within reasonable driving distance from some good ones.   But we checked the prices, even the two star motels and to quote Chris Rock in the TV show -  In Living Color  [reference:  Counting Down The 12 Most Memorable Recurring "In Living Color" Characters - 8. Cheap Pete]

** Good Lord that's a lot of money! **

It seemed we were not alone in our sticker shock.  Though high tourist season, many places near the parks still had vacancies.

So instead, we took some wonderful daycations - where it is always cheaper to sleep in our own bed, though we had to tough out long days to drive to get back home.

Which brings us to another popular option ...

Staycations ...

We are retired and live in a beautiful area, so we are blessed that many of our days are extended staycations - that is, stay-at-home vacations.  It has been claimed that word was coined by the writers of the Canadian sitcom, Corner Gas.  [reference:  World Wide Words: Staycation]

This episode "Mail Fraud" may have been the vehicle to make staycations part of the culture.

Below is the first few minutes of the episode (from: http://youtu.be/5c0SzzZB9uw ) which introduces the concept:

Daycations ...  staycations  ...

It is a trend of enjoying life in a tough economy and on a budget.

And these are some
Signs of the Times ....

Signs of the Times (part 4) - Doomsday Preppers

Wikipeida/St. Gertrud

* Doomsday *

... it's coming ...

And St. John wrote about it in the first century when he recorded his vision of end times including the famous -
(reference:  Revelation 6:1-6  )

Below is a clip dramatizing the reading of the coming of these foreboding horsemen from the Book of Revelation - also known as the Apocalypse:

(video clip from:  http://youtu.be/_js48XLLfXk )

Since the time of St. John, the end of the age was imminent.  The apostle even said it could have happened in the 1st century - 1 John 2:18   And since the 1st century, there have been many predictions of the end of the world.  The year anno Domini 1000 (the first millennium in the year of our Lord - the big Y1K) was one of them - History’s Biggest Doomsday Prediction Fails

Another failed prediction?  ... You betcha ... one of many

Even Jesus said of the end of the age -

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."
(For context of passage on the end times, reference:  Matthew 24)

Are we smarter than Jesus? Don't think so ... many of us aren't even smarter than a 5th grader.  :)  But that doesn't stop the predictions from coming and people from thinking about doomsday. And a thousand years ago,we had

The Doomsday Book ...

Benjamin Franklin has been quoted to say  -

In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.  (reference:  Benjamin Franklin Quotes)

And shortly after the failed Doomsday prediction of 1000 AD, anno Domini 1085 in fact, William the Conqueror commissioned  this Domesday Book - (Domesday, another spelling of Doomsday) for the purpose of assessing taxes on the English.  Because of it's extent of complying information of the subjects' assets, the records were compared to the records in the Books that were opened at the Final Judgment before the Great White Throne, as written in the Apocalypse.   (reference: Revelation 20:11-15)

Wikipedia/Domesday Book

But as seen in some examples in the article referenced above - History’s Biggest Doomsday Prediction Fails - anxious times beget anxious feelings beget anxious predictions ... such as Armageddon is just around the corner.   And among those ...

Cold War Angst ...

Baby boomers may remember the Cold War, living under the perceived threat of nuclear war and mutually assured destruction.  The big October surprise of 1962 came to the American people in the form of the Cuban Missile Crisis when John F. Kennedy was President.  And World War III nearly happened with a nuclear showdown with the Russians.  Seriously.

As fallout - no pun intended - with my classmates, I had to memorize my civil defense number.  (I still remember it: 1-37)  Our teachers made us write it under our name on all our homework assignments.  It was suppose to come in useful when the Russians fired their nukes at us over the North Pole.  When the alarms we sounded (I don't even know what they were supposed to sound like for a nuclear attack), we were to head for the coal mines in the hills for shelter (we had 20 minutes they said) and wait for the fallout to abate enough before we came out to this brave new mutant world.

Ridiculous?  The clip below punctuates the fears of the times with the false security of how to overcome a nuclear blast:

(Video clip from Duck and Cover:  http://youtu.be/89od_W8lMtA )

More Doomsday scares ...

And since then we had even more warnings of the end of the world.  Here are only a few more -

* First written in 1970, Hal Lindsey's  The Late Great Planet Earth.  (It's about the end of the age and Christ's Second Coming, but the author took his cue from Jesus and did not give any dates.)

* 2000 AD -  the Y2K scare  as the Y1K scare in 1000 AD did not come to pass

*  December, 21, 2012 - the Mayan calender ends ... and so will the world.   Whew! Dodged that bullet.

Now we have ....

Doomsday Preppers, the series

And since the pilot 2011, this show on the National Geographic channel highlights preparing  for a time when the sh** hits the fan or even surviving Armageddon.  (reference:  Doomsday Preppers | National Geographic Channel )

Below is a clip to a promo for the season starting in February of 2012:

(Video clip from Doomsday Prepper:   http://youtu.be/XbgUZFHb9QY  )

Some prepare for surviving Armageddon; some for disasters that are all so common.  And a new season is starting soon, August 13, 2013 - Doomsday Preppers : Air Dates Guide

Without letting fear consume us, preparing and planning for emergency situations does make sense and is prudent, especially for those areas of country in which disasters are known to happen:   earthquakes in California, tornadoes in the mid-West, hurricanes off the coasts, fires around acres of dry forests ...

During emergencies, people can be cut off from civilization; the thin blue line of civil infrastructure - fire and police protection as well as emergency medical care and other vital services - power, water, sewage, food supplies - gone.

One example in recent memory ...

Hurricane Sandy  hit in October of 2012.  (reference :  A Timeline of Hurricane Sandy’s Path of Destruction – News Watch )

Below is a clips of the aftermath of Sandy - a very unpleasant October surprise.

(Video clip from Hoboken Is Hit by Hurricane Sandy - The Flooding Continues:  http://youtu.be/RmzIClQImW8 )

There are lots of websites on preparedness - just google and tons will pop up.  But here is one for starters - Are you prepared?

In these uncertain times, Doomsday Preppers are one of the

Signs of the Times (part 3) - Layoffs

layoffs and food lines

Has the recovery happened yet?

To many,
and for too many

- no

Currently, unemployment in the United States is around 8% (latest 7.7%) and has stayed at that level for some time.  That does not even factor in those who have given up looking for work or are underemployed.  (reference:  Unemployment Rate Down As Americans Give Up On Work - Forbes)

For the trends, check out:  Unemployment in the U.S. - Google Public Data Explorer.  And there is even a web site dedicated to layoffs:   Daily Job Cuts - Layoff News

Doesn't that lift your spirits? sarcasm-off

To his credit,  Michael Hyatt offers some positive steps to cope during this recession:  7 Ways to Keep Your Spirit Up in a Down Economy | Michael Hyatt  and 10 Benefits of a Recession | Michael Hyatt.

Since I have had my share of layoffs during my working life, I have felt the gambit of emotions that go with losing a job, losing part of my identity, as well as experiencing the frustration and rejection while looking for work during a weak economy. I sympathize with those who have been laid off.  I've been there.  You are not alone.

And on this "cheery" topic, while perusing the web, a revival of a play got my attention -

Quartermaine's Terms
 [reference: Quartermaine’s Terms, April 13th, Wyndham's - Telegraph]

What got my interest was that the main character, St. John Quatermaine, called Sinjin, had the same name of a fictional character I created in an eBook (see Anastasis).  A review of Quatermaine's Terms piqued my curiosity - teasing that the play ended with an act of cruelty leaving Sinjin's future looking very bleak.

The writer didn't say what that cruel act was - but I just had to know.  Since I was not about going to hop on a plane and fly "across the pond" to London to see the play before it closed in April, back to the internet I went.

Bingo!

I found the TV movie version from 1987 - "Screen Two" Quartermaine's Terms (TV episode 1987) - IMDb.

* Spoiler Alert *

The story was set in the 1960s at an English school to teach foreigners.  The final act, the teachers gathered before the holidays where they heard news of a death and an announcement of a new principal.  Then in the final minutes, with a veneer of politeness, Sinjin gets sacked - right before Christmas.  (Even Ebeneezer Scrooge was not so cruel to Bob Cratchit at Christmas.)

In the final scene below, I could feel the loneliness and hopelessness of Sinjin as he struggles to conceal his crushed spirit.  Undoubted, so many have been there (myself included) when losing a job and wondering about the future.

Layoffs are cruel as are many other kinds of loses in this life.  Yet, people do carry on and overcome them.  Perhaps that is why this song from the musical Carousel has endured.  The words speak to the spirit as all human beings, at times, struggle during dark days and have the hope that -

We Never Walk Alone

Layoffs are one of the signs of the times.

For all those who lost jobs, wonder what is next, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

May ...

You Never Walk Alone.

As the good Lord promised -

When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; ...

Isaiah 43:2,3 (NIV)
