Pray4America (part 19) - II Chronicles 7:14

Ten years ago, movements from the left and the right, such as the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street , emerged from discontent of the power of the few over the values of the many.

The song below, I am America, reflect some the zeitgeist of the times as well as today:

As our problems seem overwhelming, the song lyrics suggest the one hope to heal our land:

II Chronicles 7:14

If My people, 

who are called by My Name, 

will humble themselves 

and pray and seek My face 

and turn from their wicked ways, 

then I will hear from heaven, 

and I will forgive their sin 

and will heal their land.

Pray4America (part 20) - Australia still has our back!

Anne Graham Lotz, the chairperson of the National Day of Prayer, invites us to pray for the healing of America on May 4th, 2017.



And one of the themes  comes from from Daniel 9:19

Lord, listen! 
Lord, forgive!
Lord, hear and act! 
For Your sake, my God, do not delay,
 because Your city and 
Your people bear your Name.

And down under, in Australia, Warwick March announced their National Day of Prayer and Fasting team has set aside  this April 30 - May 4. 2017, to intercede for America.



And they continue with the theme, II Chronicles 7:14

If my people, 
who are called by My Name, 
will humble themselves and pray 
and seek My face and 
turn from their wicked ways, 
then I will hear from heaven, 
and I will forgive their sin and 
will heal their land.

For we have this promise...

Therefore confess your sins to each other 
and pray for each other 
so that you may be healed. 

The prayer of a righteous person 
is powerful and effective.

James 5:16 (NIV)

God bless Australia!

Pray4America (part 17) - Washington and Providence

George Washington's Birthday - President's Day

February is the month when we celebrate President's Day.  At first, Washington's Birthday was observed on February 22nd, but the holiday was consolidated to honor the US presidents.  And for 2015,  this day will be observed on February 16.   [reference:  Washington's Birthday 2015 | Presidents Day 2015]

 But as for the original reason for this holiday, let's take a look at ....

George Washington - the man

George Washington  often called the Father of our Country, and the few words of this post do not do the man justice.  The History Channel page has many great resources on his biography and impact on the founding of our nation:  George Washington - U.S. Presidents - HISTORY.com

Since we're well into the third century of the founding of the United States of America, I have been troubled about at the direction we are going as a nation.  It seems there is little an average person can do.  Or is there?

Below is a clip of history changing prayers, including the preservation of George Washington:



With this story, I am heartened that prayer can change history.  But what if it had turned out differently?  What would happen if George Washington were killed before his time and the American colonist lost the war for independence?

What if America did not exist?

Below is a clip showing such a premise:


George Washington, as one of our founders, played a pivotal roll in creating the United States of America and many of the ideals that drew many to this country.  And America is more than just a country, it's still an ideal worth fighting for.

So this month of President's Day, please continue in the spirit of George Washington to ...

Pray4America (part 15) - Communion on the Moon

On July 20, 1969 - 45 years ago - two men, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, were the first humans to walk on the moon. [reference:  First Man on the Moon]

Much has been recorded on this epic event. But after those first few minutes after they landed on the moon, Buzz Aldrin said, "This is the LM pilot. I'd like to take this opportunity to ask every person listening in, whoever and wherever they may be, to pause for a moment and contemplate the events of the past few hours and to give thanks in his or her own way."

Here is an account attributed to Buzz Aldrin:

"In the radio blackout, I opened the little plastic packages which contained the bread and the wine. I poured the wine into the chalice our church had given me. In the one-sixth gravity of the moon, the wine slowly curled and gracefully came up the side of the cup. Then I read the Scripture, 'I am the vine, you are the branches. Whosoever abides in me will bring forth much fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing.'

"I had intended to read my communion passage back to earth, but at the last minute [they] had requested that I not do this. NASA was already embroiled in a legal battle with Madelyn Murray O'Hare [sic], the celebrated opponent of religion, over the Apollo 8 crew reading from Genesis while orbiting the moon at Christmas. I agreed reluctantly. I ate the tiny Host and swallowed the wine. I gave thanks for the intelligence and spirit that had brought two young pilots to the Sea of Tranquility . It was interesting for me to think: the very first liquid ever poured on the moon, and the very first food eaten there, were the communion elements."

Pray4America (part 14) - We are Americans

As the 4th of July approaches, I reflect upon the sacrifices of our patriots made for ideals liberty and freedom that our nation was built upon ...

The Spirit of 1776

But I am concerned by the wrong direction our country is going and its decline.   I wonder if the gains made during the American Revolutionary War are being reversed and will bring us full circle - back under the heel of tyranny.

What difference does it make?

Over 200 years ago we overthrew the rule of a king.  Now we are submitting to the rule a Nanny State as an ever more intrusive government continues to grow, dictating how we live our lives and curtailing our freedoms. Yet, the character of our leaders reflect us - we the people.

But I feel heartened by these words of Ronald Reagan in the 1980s, who spoke during troubling times such as today:



During this holiday, may we remember all those who have sacrificed for the freedoms that we take for granted.   And may we resolve they not be taken from us.  As Thomas Jefferson was alleged to say -

"The price of liberty is eternal vigilance." 


As mentioned in the video clip above, may we keep Pvt. Treptow's pledge he made during World War I -
''America must win this war.  
Therefore I will work, I will save, 
I will sacrifice, I will endure, 
I will fight cheerfully and do my utmost, 
as if the issue of the whole struggle depended on me alone.''

 And we are in a war - not against flesh and blood - but a battle for the soul of our nation.  

 America is worth fighting for!

Pray4America (part 13) - Apollo 13 Reflections and Prayer

This is my 13th post for this thread.  So  the number 13 will be the theme of this post.

Apollo 13 ...   April 13 ....

After the successes of Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 that had landed men on the moon, three would be a charm for Apollo 13, even if its number can be considered unlucky.

But on April 13, 1970 (according to the reckoning of standard time zones in the US), this unlucky malfunction happened, as dramatizes in the following movie clip:

But like in many times of distress in our nation's history, our leaders have called for prayer, not only in times of peril like Apollo 13, but also for prayers of divine protection, such as the historic Apollo 11 moon landing.

Below is a clip about prayer during the Apollo missions:


Apollo 13 has been called the "successful failure."   The world had watched this drama unfold on live TV from a nearly fatal catastrophe in space to a nail-biting rescue, where nobody died.

(It was also the makings of a great movie of its namesake - Apollo 13 (1995).)
  
 That said, there is not always deliverance in this life.  As for the space program, we have had the tragedies of Apollo 1,  Challenger, and Columbia, which remind us of our mortality.  (And this is a topic for another post.)

Yet, in times of trouble, many Americans as well as those throughout the world looked to the heavens - to the Creator - for help.

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
He sent out his word and healed them;
he rescued them from the grave.
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind.

 Psalm 107:19-21 (NIV)

And for our present perils, here is a prayer for deliverance:
Heavenly Father -

During crises and grave danger in the past, we have called on You, Lord God, for help.  And gracious Lord, You have answered us and changed the course of history.  May we never forget Your mercy during these times as well as Your goodness during peace and prosperity.

Forgive us for living like practical atheists, like You don’t exist.  While shutting You out of our daily lives, we sometimes only come to You as a magic wand of deliverance, especially from the peril caused by our disobedience.

May we repent of our unbelief and for treating You like an idol.  May we recognize our need as we do not live by bread alone, but by every word the proceeds from Your mouth.  And though the grass withers and the flower fades, Your Word  abides forever.  

We ask for your deliverance for our heroes, home and abroad, in their distress – as You did during the perils of Apollo 13.  May we daily walk with You and be Your instruments for healing in our land.

In Jesus Name we pray,

Amen

Pray4America (part 10) - Real Hope for America

America's Pastor

Certainly, Dr. Graham has been a powerful evangelist and a voice to call our nation back to God for over six decades -  [reference: Billy Graham Biography | Story of the famous evangelist Billy Graham]  Below is a short clip of various interviews of skeptical talk show hosts during those years.





As noted in the video,  "America's Pastor" has pledged to continue to preach the gospel as long as God gives  him breath and has the strength to do it.

In this article, he gives a dire warning to our nation:  The Rev. Billy Graham's dire warning: America is drowning in ‘sea of immorality’ - Washington Times  After the 2012 elections, Billy Graham had announced  - My Hope America ...

 For such a time as this.

As Billy Graham turns 95, he has prepared for America perhaps his last message to be given on his birthday, November 7th:
